CTERA debuts new technologies for NAS and cloud backup and storage
Debut at the Lunch@Piero’s press event during CES: Cloud data storage and back-up company CTERA showed its new technologies to create a complete platform for ISPs to be able to offer advanced cloud storage services to end customers. Its unique, multi-layered approach combines cloud computing and Network Attached Storage (NAS).
CTERA co-founder Liran Eshel, who previously led SofaWare Technologies (a Check Point company), talks about the tiny CTERA CloudPlug that transforms any external USB drive into a network file server with automatic online backup.

in the near future…this system of cloud data storage,?
where all our data will be stored on huge data storage networks..
what are the advantages and disadvantages…..
it nice that u can access your data from any access point….
but do we really want the government and other authorities to be able to know everything we do by accessing our data….even though there maybe laws about it….they will still do what they want to do….
i would rather have my own personal data storage….i feel much safer….
In the early 1900s there was a belief among many architects that in the future people will live in these huge communal buildings and that personal homes will become a thing of the past. The huge buildings did come soon enough, but they never replaced personal houses. For whatever reason, people seem to like having a home of their own, even if its more expensive to buy and maintain.
Similarly, cloud data storage in inevitable and, for certain applications, may be the only viable solution. However, it will not replace conventional data storage technology. In fact, data is multiplying fast enough to keep in business just about any approach to data storage.
Over the years I’ve worked with may different types of enterprise-class data storage systems: everything from old Sun disk arrays to the latest EMC products and high-speed Panasas networked storage systems designed for HPC clusters. In a modern large enterprise there is room for all of these storage technologies.
An EMC NAS may work well for a Web server, but it will fail miserably with an HPC cluster. Directly-attached disk arrays were briefly eclipsed by NAS systems, but are now making a strong comeback. The main drawback of directly-attached storage was access limitation: only one server could access an expensive disk array. Now with virtual hosts and logical domains directly-attached storage can be partitioned among multiple logical systems, making it a much faster and reliable storage solution than anything that relies on the network and the good old NFS.
One technology research firm (IDC) estimated that there was 161 exabytes of data in the world in 2007. This number was matched by 185 exabytes of available data storage. It is estimated that by 2010 the amount of data will grow to about 1 zetabyte, while storage will lag behind at around 600 exabytes. As you can see, at this time we simply cannot afford to discard any type of storage technology. Even the old tape libraries are still very much in business.

Fruit flies and ants EVERYWHERE! HELLLP!!
My house is being taken over by ants and small tiny little red flies- I think they’re fruit flies. There are HUNDREDS of them in my kitchen! I have scrubbed EVERYTHING down with bleach-floors, cupboards, inside cupboards, sink, washing machine and dishwasher, stove, fridge both inside and out, garbage can, recycling bins, I re-washed all dishes/pots/pans/tupperware
I even bought all airtight food storage containers and put EVERY bit of food possible into them in the cupboards and fridge- no open packages or food ANYWHERE in the house. I even did the same cleaning routine in all the rooms of our house. Everything is soooo clean you could eat off any surface in the house. Yet, we still have a major ant issue- and the flies are makign me nuts- when you walk into the kitchen they’re like a cloud. They even sit on our clean laundry, which makes me NUTTY. You can’t leave your plate of food at dinner for even 2 seconds or it has at least 50 flies on it. I don’t let food of any kind sit out at all, so there is no food they are getting into. I even emptied all our closets, steam cleaned upholstry and everything…
I also made sure all the doors have no space around them for the flies to come in. I know they came into the house somehow- and now Ic an’t get them OUT of the house.
How can I get rid of them in a safe way? We have 2 kids, 3 cats and a dog- and nowhere to goto leave the house to spray or anything extreme.
And about the pet food- the flies and ants don’t seem to bother with it at all. I have watched and they don’t go near it. I also wash and put away the bowls as soon as they are done eating.
Something in your house is drawing them to it. Find out what it is and get rid of it.
They dont stay where there is no food.
You get rid of their food and they disappear almost instantly

Can’t fix cloudy aquarium water!?
I recently set up my 10-gal. aquarium that I had had in storage for several years. I rinsed everything and scrubbed it all with hot water (didn’t want to use any chemicals). The tank had been in plastic while in storage so it was pretty clean. I still vacuumed the gravel. I did this three weeks ago and added a stablizer that a worker from PetSmart recommended to help with cycling the aquarium. I then added four fish (two blue gouramis and two banded leporinus) approximately one week later after ensuring the water was stable.
My water became cloudy a few days later so I added some water clarifier, which fixed the cloudiness overnight. A few days later, it returned so I added more of the product and it was fine afterwards. Within the past few days, the water clouded up again and nothing has fixed it. I’ve added the same product and it hasn’t worked. Yesterday, I did a 25-30% water change and changed the filter (I’ve changed the filter three times). I’ve broken the filter down and cleaned it. My pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels are within normal limits. I took some water to PetSmart today to have it tested and they can find nothing wrong with it. My fish are fine (surprisingly) but the water has a milky haze that has gotten worse. I got a different water clarifier today, hoping it would help, and so far it’s done nothing. I’m not overfeeding the fish. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks! : )
I also have an under-gravel filter.
The good news: you aren’t doing anything wrong. The cloudiness is caused by a bacterial bloom that is essential for the health of your aquarium. They are the "de-nitrifying" bacteria that are the cycle of your tank. Because it is a brand new tank, they are just starting to become established, and will soon settle into the filter media and the gravel in your tank. They are good don’t worry!
Don’t change the water unless your ammonia levels start to creep up, and leave the filter alone so the bacteria can hang out in there. It may take up to two weeks for this to clear up, especially since it is a smaller tank. Just be patient and it will work itself out. The clarifier stuff you can buy doesn’t really work well. ..it is just a temporary problem.
Good luck!
