Domain Names: A Sneaky Attempt To Take My Name
If you have a domain name(s) that you’ve registered how much
thought have you given to who else might want the name? That
question crossed my mind only in the context of – do I have a
name that others might like to buy or one that could potentially
drive traffic to a website. I was registering many domain names.
Some names I wanted to use myself, some to keep, hoping they
would go up in value, and others to sell as soon as I could find
a buyer. Most of the names I had made up – until it had become
difficult to think of new names that had meaning and were not
very long. When that happened I started registering expired
domain names.
After accumulating several hundred names I decided to take a
break and pondered my next move. I didn’t have to wait long.
Within a week I received a notice from my registrar. It seemed a
registrar in Germany had someone who was transferring one of my
domain names to their account. How could they get away with
that? That was my first experience of having someone steal a
name from me. I had heard of such things, but experiencing them
first hand is much more real.
I quickly emailed my registrar and asked what was going on and
that I had not given anyone permission to take one of my names.
I was told my domain had already been transferred to someone
else. I gave my registrar explicit instructions to cancel the
transfer, which they did immediately, and as soon as I got the
name back they placed a lock on the domain so it could not
happen again.
Confident I had solved the problem, that incident quickly left
my mind, as I had a myriad of other things to do. But no -
things never seem so easy, as I came to realize a couple of
weeks later. I checked my email and there was an email from that
same registrar, where two weeks earlier someone tried to
transfer my domain name. It was a form letter in both English
and German telling me they were transferring my domain name to
their registry. I asked a co-worker who was German to translate
the German language part. She verified that language said the
same as the English version. All my domains were locked so there
was nothing I had to do.
By now I wondered how my name, ~~~~fix.com*, which I made up,
could be so important. I did some quick research on the Internet
and found there was a company in Germany with the name ~~~~fix.
It was starting to aggravate me that if someone wanted my dot
com version of the name why didn’t they just make me an offer
for the name. It seemed awfully suspicious that someone wanted
that name so badly that they would try to transfer it when it
was plainly up for sale. The directory website where that name
was hosted showed a for sale notice along with a price.
I quickly composed a letter and emailed it to that registrar
expressing my thoughts. I also raised the price of the domain
name once I had sent the email. Because I was upset about the
matter I decided to raise the selling price by a factor of ten.
I never received a response from my email and assumed the matter
was closed.
Well, to make a long story short I received three more emails
within the next three weeks, each with attempts to get me to
transfer my domain name to them. The emails included dubious
documentation and said “You must agree to enter into a new
Registration Agreement with us”. I ignored all attempts to sign
away my domain name to the other registrar.
The last four attempts to get me to surrender my domain name all
occurred just after ICANN changed the rules pertaining to domain
names. That new ruling took affect November 12, 2004 making it
easier (in my opinion) for someone to sneakily transfer a domain
name. With the current new rules it seems all you have to do is
not respond to your registrar within five days of them sending
you notice indicating your domain name is being transferred. If
you happen to be on vacation, not respond to your email quickly,
or overlook such email, you may find yourself short a domain
name. If however, your domain name(s) is locked, then you
shouldn’t have to worry about that problem. My impression is
that many registrars are now locking domain names by default so
they cannot be transferred automatically, but you should check
yours to be sure.
All this fuss over a domain name I made up got me thinking about
my rights to my domain name. I checked the Anticybersquatting
Consumer Protection Act, signed by President Clinton, November
29, 1999. I’m no lawyer, but it does not look favorable for me,
even though I made up a name I did not think anyone else had.
I’ll let you the reader check the law and come to your own
conclusion.
There has been no further action on that domain name and it has
been two and a half months since the last attempt to transfer it
away from me. Is this the end of that saga?
* I’ve left out the first few characters for my protection.
Contact me if you must know the exact name.

What is an affordable off-site backup and recovery solution?
We are a small Commercial Real Estate firm that is looking for an affordable and dependable solution to backup our server off-site. We have 140 GB of information on our Windows 2003 server, but probably only need to backup about half of that so we will need a company that also allows us to select what we want to backup. I looked into companies like Iron Mountain, but they come in around $750/mo, which is far from affordable. Any suggestions?
$ 750/mo…
Yes, you can find much more cheap solution.
I am using mozy service for off site backup for more than 2 years, and is a good service. Are available a "home" and a "professional" service.
Use the link below to try it for free earning 2.5 GB of free space:

For unlimited space backup the cost is about $5/mo, if I remember. Check in the site for the updated costs.

Repeatedly breaking heart, dealing with bi-polar ex.
I am posting this in the mental health section because a) I’m losing my marbles, and b) I’d like to have some responses from people who understand how loved ones with bipolar disorder act.
My fiance and I broke up not even 3 months ago, 2 months before we were supposed to get married. We had a fabulous relationship but he suffers from bipolar disorder and after years of being unconditionally supportive and trying to help him get on track, he just wasn’t helping himself and was getting worse… servere manic episodes and stopped taking his meds (so withdrawl too). Eventually we started fighting all the time and he told me he didn’t need me anymore and I was just holding him back (from all his unrealistic business plans and wanting to be a swinger– a manic thing)… he tossed me aside like I was a peice of disposable trash, told me I was just his crutch.
So, obviously hurt by the way he treated me, I moved home. I am actually doing okay. I am a strong and resiliant person and I have learned a lot from this relationship, about what I want, need, deserve… and about who I am. I am doing my best to get my life on track again, to not worry about him so much, to enjoy my independence, meet new people, and spend time with friends.
I’m doing good… MOST of the time. Every month my ex has to send me money to pay his half of our joint bills. He’s sending me $500/month for the next year to pay it off. Every month I have to talk to him… when/how is the money coming, etc. We have to correspond about things like our vehicle registrations and some of our things that are in storage. Stuff like that.
Every time he emails me he brags about how good he’s doing. "Oh yeah, I’m all better. I’ve got this new business and am making millions of dollars and I have a new truck and a new girlfriend and I’m not angry with you anymore (like I was the bad guy here) and life is just faaabulous without you". It also depends on his moods. One day he’s all happy go lucky trying to make me think he’s on cloud 9 and the next day he’s taking something I said completely innocently and completely misinterpreting it and tearing my head off. I can tell he’s still having episodes, I can read between the lines enough to see he’s up and down still.
So my head is telling me "Just relax. He’s only saying these things to hurt you. He wants you to think he’s doing fabulous because it makes him look like he’s not hurting and missing you. You know that in a week his ‘business’ will plummet, he’ll lose the place he’s renting, job, and his new girlfriend will realize he’s nuts". This was the cycle for the last 9 years, why would it be any different now.
But- even though my head is telling me that he’s playing games with me, trying to hurt me, that I just need to forget it… it’s still like this huge stab in the heart every time. I am doing so good at moving on, and then WHAM I’m right back at square one starting over every month. I hate this. Top that off with the fact that he’s got a new girlfriend now, 3 MONTHS later!!! I have never felt so disrespected and disposable and completely worthless in my entire life.
Am I crazy to feel this way? Am I reading into what he’s saying/doing right? How do I deal with him every month without feeling like my guts are being torn out over and over?? I know time is the only thing that can heal a broken heart but is there not any possible way to fast track things or to numb myself to his stupid monthly emails? I just want to move on, I gave him so much of myself and he acts like I never meant anything to him (and I know he loved me, that was never a question). I just want to move on with my life, just want to put this behind me.
Sorry this is really long!!
Well then maybe its time you start telling him you want to sale the vehicle and get out of a joint thing that would be a starter, of course selling it means that your not more than likely going to get out of it what is owed against… but for the heartache and piece of mind, I’d say it would be well worth it..
And if he does have a new girlfriend, then she did you a favor, sorry to say.. Cause she’ll not probably put up with it as long as you have..
and you know what if he hasn’t figured out what a good thing he lost, then guess who’s problem that is??
Don’t let it get you down so far, thats where he seems to not mind where you are ya know.. and if he’s not grown up enuff to take care of his own medical conditions, taking his medicines.. He never will.. SO I say move on, find some one that loves you for you all of time..
Best of Luck

Where can I find the cheapest web hosting and domain names?
I want to host bulk domain names or get free hosting. I know that this probably does not exist. I want to host 5 domain names on one hosting plan.
Have you tried http://nicepricesites.com/ ? They actually have free web hosting and you can upload to your site with FTP. I wouldn’t recommend that you use their domain names because you always want a unique domain name. I do use the free hosting for one of my wordpress blogs. I have my other blogs hosted there also along with the domain names.
Hope this helps.

How do you put up a website without paying for web hosting?
Not asking about free web hosting. I mean, how do you setup a website without using a web hosting service. Obviously they run their own website and support other peoples. There can’t just be a never ending chain of web hosts supporting each other. So there should be a way to just buy a domain and host your own website, right?
You can host your own website but it means that you have to have a server, or computer acting as a server running 24hrs a day. Also your ISP may not like you doing this and will restrict, or shutdown your connection. Another thing that you need to consider is that your upload speed is usually significantly slower than your download speed, usual speeds are around 128-384 kbps. This means that if you host a popular site the amount of time it takes for your viewers to view each page will be terribly long to the point of being a victim of it’s own success.
My advice is either use a free hosting service, with it’s downsides or pay for a professional service who can offer significant access speeds.

Birth Certificates Crisis
The Government has extended the deadline for submission of birth certificates for purposes of exam registration from the 31st of March to the 30th of June this year. This is as a result of an emergency meeting called by Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, involving the Ministry of Education, the Kenya National Examination Council, the immigrations office and the registrar of births and deaths, to try to find a solution to the crisis in Government registration offices countrywide. Thousands of parents have lately jammed the offices of registration of births and deaths in a last minute rush to secure certificates for their children following a Government directive that all candidates present the document before they are registered.
